SUMMARY

The herbal monograph selects and summarises scientific studies and textbooks regarding efficacy, dosage and safety to support the therapeutic uses of walnut leaf.

This herbal drug, by definition, consists of the whole or cut dry leaves of Juglans regia L. (Juglandaceae).

Studies with its main characteristic constituents, ellagitannin-type tannins, flavonoids, diarylheptanoids, juglone derivates, anthraquinones, megastigmanes and oligomeric proanthocyanidins are included.

The therapeutic indications are minor inflammatory conditions of the skin as well as excessive perspiration of hands and feet.

Administration of walnut leaf addresses posology; its duration of use; contra-indications; special warnings; special precautions for use; interactions with other medicinal products; other forms of interaction; in pregnancy and lactation; its effects on ability to drive; undesirable effects and overdose.

In vitro experiments with walnut leaf demonstrated effects on cell proliferation as well as hypoglycaemic, antimicrobial, enzyme inhibitory and antioxidant/radical scavenging activities.
In vivo experiments with walnut leaf or its extracts demonstrated antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-nociceptive, hepatoprotective, and sedative properties.

Controlled clinical studies with walnut leaf demonstrated hypoglycaemic effects.

Preclinical safety data for walnut leaf were assessed in toxicity studies.

Safety data were assessed in human studies.

The selection of literature cited in the monograph is aimed at bringing together relevant information about the possible physiological roles of walnut leaf and its major constituents.
